The short answer

Dubai South has no metro station of its own. The nearest stations today are Expo 2020, inside Expo City, and Dubai Investment Park, both on the Red Line extension called Route 2020.

The official Blue Line (2029) and Gold Line (2032) lists include no Dubai South station. A Red Line extension to Al Maktoum Airport is still at the consultant study stage, with no opening date.

If you buy in Dubai South, plan to drive to a station or ride a feeder bus. Do not plan around a new line arriving at your door.

Key takeaways

  1. Expo 2020 station opened in June 2021 and is the southern end of the Red Line.

  2. The Blue Line opens on 9 September 2029, and its 14 stations are in eastern and northern Dubai.

  3. The Gold Line opens on 9 September 2032 and ends at Jumeirah Golf Estates, not in Dubai South.

  4. Jumeirah Golf Estates is the real hub for southern Dubai, where the Red Line, Gold Line and Etihad Rail meet.

  5. Every project page needs a named station and a real distance, not the phrase “near metro.”

What runs today

Expo 2020 station

Expo 2020 station is the end of the Red Line extension, inside Expo City Dubai. Property Finder says it opened in June 2021 as part of Route 2020, which added seven stations from Jabal Ali to Expo City.

Property Finder’s December 2025 guide lists trains every 3 to 5 minutes at peak and every 6 to 8 minutes off peak. It lists station hours of 5 AM to midnight, with a 1 AM close on Fridays and an 8 AM first train on Sundays. Check the RTA timetable before you plan a trip.

Dubai Investment Park and Jumeirah Golf Estates

These two Route 2020 stations also sit close to the Dubai South area. Dubai Investment Park suits buyers on the Jebel Ali side, and Jumeirah Golf Estates is the interchange for Etihad Rail and the future Gold Line.

A station name check

No station is officially called “Dubai South Metro Station.” Some guides use that name for Expo 2020. You will also see Expo City station, Expo Metro Station and Route 2020 for the same area. Use the RTA’s name, Expo 2020, when you search for timetables.

How far each project sits from a station

Your project pages list developer drive times to Expo City. These are the developers’ figures, not the walking distance to the station platform:

  1. Aristo: 8 minutes

  2. Vivida Residences: 10 minutes

  3. South Living: 12 minutes

  4. Greenfield Living: 13 minutes

  5. Lincoln Star Residence 4: 15 minutes

  6. RR Grand: 16 minutes

  7. Aris By Grid: 19 minutes

  8. Galleria Residences: about 3 km

  9. Livia Residences: lists a Dubai Investment Park metro station 4 minutes away

Expo City is an area, and the station sits inside it. Ask the developer for the distance to the Expo 2020 station by road, and the route or shuttle that links your building to it.

Claim against fact

“The Blue Line goes to Dubai South”

This is false. Gulf News lists the 14 Blue Line stations: Creek Interchange (Al Jaddaf), Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Ras Al Khor, International City 1, 2 and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, two in Academic City, Centrepoint, Mirdif and Al Warqa. None is in Dubai South.

Some guides still say otherwise. Property Finder’s Expo guide calls the Blue Line a “direct link” to Dubai South. Real Estate Club Dubai says it does not directly serve the area. The official list backs the second view.

“The Gold Line will serve Dubai South”

Also false. The Dubai Media Office says the Gold Line runs from Al Ghubaiba to Jumeirah Golf Estates, through Mina Rashid, City Walk, Business Bay, Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Nad Al Sheba, Meydan, Al Barsha South and Jumeirah Village Circle. Dubai South is not on the list.

“The metro will reach the airport soon”

Not yet. RTA says it has released a tender for a consultant to start the study stage for the Red Line extension to Al Maktoum Airport. An RTA rail chief said the Airport Express line needs “a couple of years” of study before work begins. No opening date exists.

“Metro access adds 20% to 30% to your price”

No one can promise that. RTA says the Gold Line could add up to 20% to property values near its stations. That claim covers the Gold Line corridor, not Dubai South, and brokers who quote 30% give no data for it.

The Blue Line

  1. Opening: 9 September 2029.

  2. Progress: An RTA rail chief said on 14 September that it is 24% complete. RTA expects about 30% by the end of 2026.

  3. Length and stations: 30 km and 14 stations across two branches.

  4. Who it helps: Eastern and northern Dubai, including easier access to Dubai International Airport.

It matters to you indirectly. It improves city wide travel, but it does not put a station in Dubai South.

The Gold Line

  1. Approved: 22 April 2026 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid.

  2. Size: AED 34 billion, 42 km, 18 stations, fully underground.

  3. Opening: 9 September 2032.

  4. Timeline: The tender comes before the end of 2026, and RTA hopes to award the contract by the end of 2027.

  5. Interchanges: Green Line at Al Ghubaiba, Red Line at Business Bay and Jumeirah Golf Estates, Etihad Rail at Meydan and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

  6. Stations: Gulf News says exact station locations have not been announced.

Red Line extension

Gulf Business reported on 22 April that the plan would run from Expo 2020 station to the Al Maktoum West Terminal, about 3 km with two new stations. It is at the tender and study stage.

Airport Express

The proposed Airport Express line is 55 km with five stations. It would run from Dubai International Airport through Al Jaddaf and Al Khail Road to Jumeirah Village Circle, then on to Al Maktoum Airport. It is also at the study stage.

High speed rail

Gulf News reports a planned high speed rail station at Al Maktoum Airport, with no date.

Etihad Rail and the Jumeirah Golf Estates hub

Etihad Rail’s Dubai Al Yalayis Station was scheduled to open on 30 September 2026, near Jumeirah Golf Estates on the E311. Gulf News says the trip to Abu Dhabi takes about 57 minutes, and the station is about 30 minutes by road from Al Maktoum Airport.

A footbridge links the station to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station. Gulf News headlines report that it opened on 15 October, with shuttle buses also available.

This makes Jumeirah Golf Estates the hub for southern Dubai, since the Red Line, Etihad Rail and the future Gold Line all meet there. For a Dubai South resident, that still means a drive.

The timeline at a glance

  1. 2021: Expo 2020 station opens.

  2. 2026: Etihad Rail’s Dubai station opens, and the Gold Line tender is due.

  3. 2027: RTA hopes to award the Gold Line contract.

  4. 2029: Blue Line opens, on 9 September.

  5. 2032: Gold Line opens, on 9 September.

  6. Airport link: study stage, no date.

Does a station nearby change the rent?

Property Finder’s December 2025 listings near Expo 2020 station, in Expo Village, ask about AED 53,000 to 57,000 for a 440 sqft studio, AED 78,000 to 82,000 for a one bedroom and AED 97,000 to 98,000 for a two bedroom.

Metropolitan’s 2025 Dubai South report gives average rents of AED 41,025, AED 55,002 and AED 80,334 for those unit types. That puts the Expo Village asking rents about 29% to 39% higher for studios, 42% to 49% for one bedrooms and 21% to 22% for two bedrooms.

Treat this as a hint, not a rule. It compares asking rents against average contract rents, and Expo Village is a newer, walkable community. Our rental yield guide shows how to test a rent assumption.

Questions to ask a developer about transport

  1. Which station is nearest, and what is its RTA name?

  2. How far is it by road, in km and in minutes at peak hour?

  3. Is there a public bus or a shuttle, and which route or operator runs it?

  4. Where does that route stop, and how often does it run?

  5. Is that service written into the sales documents, or only in the brochure?

  6. Does the “near metro” claim mean a walk, a drive or a planned line?

Who should care and who can relax

Care about the station if

  1. You commute to a job near a Red Line stop and want to avoid driving the whole way.

  2. You plan to rent your unit to tenants who value metro access.

Relax about the station if

  1. You work near Dubai South or the airport and will drive anyway.

  2. You buy for the long term and do not rely on a new line arriving.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a metro in Dubai South?

Not a station named for Dubai South. Expo 2020 station, inside Expo City, is the nearest, with Dubai Investment Park also close.

Does the Blue Line go to Dubai South?

No. The official list of 14 stations includes none in Dubai South.

Will the Gold Line reach Dubai South?

No. It ends at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and its published route does not include Dubai South.

When will the metro reach Al Maktoum Airport?

There is no date. RTA has released a tender for a consultant to start the study stage for the Red Line extension.

Can I take a train to Abu Dhabi from Dubai South?

You can take Etihad Rail from Al Yalayis Station near Jumeirah Golf Estates, about 57 minutes to Abu Dhabi. It is a drive from Dubai South.

Is Dubai South car dependent?

Yes, for most residents. You can use the Red Line from Expo 2020 or Dubai Investment Park, but most homes need a drive or a bus to reach them.

Do homes near the metro cost more?

Often, but the evidence here is asking rents, not sales. Ask for the specific distance and route before you pay extra.

How can I check a “near metro” claim?

Ask for the station’s RTA name, the distance by road and the bus or shuttle route. If the developer cannot give all three, treat the claim as marketing.

Conclusion: plan for a drive, not a station at your door

For now, Dubai South’s metro story is Expo 2020 station and Dubai Investment Park, with Jumeirah Golf Estates as the hub for Etihad Rail and the future Gold Line. The Blue Line and Gold Line improve Dubai, but neither stops in Dubai South.

Choose a project by its real distance to a station, and ask for that distance in writing. Treat any promise of a metro at your door as unconfirmed.
